Your poems fill a gap in literature about the Korean War and a perspective on that war from both a U.S. soldier and a Korean civilian. As I wrote in my blog, I never had such conversations with my father; your writing about yours with YOUR dad eased some of my own longing. As a fellow writer, I also admire the beautiful craftsmanship of your poetry. mBest to you in your work.Irishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06226091959080769559noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4146739799811426023.post-65745583143275754222014-11-20T07:21:39.670-08:002014-11-20T07:21:39.670-08:00Dear Iris,
Thank you for speaking about my book i...Dear Iris,

Thank you for speaking about my book in your blog. I never thought I would write a book like this, but with the encouragement of a mentor decided to. The most difficult thing about the project was the publication of it, firstly because no one wanted to publish such a "niche" book and secondly because I began to doubt myself that people would want to read such a collection. Since the book has been published, I've been surprised how many conversations I've had with people - many whom I've known for years - about their fathers or grandfathers who served in Korea and who, like me, didn't know much about it.

Yesterday, on a trip from Vermont to Iowa to visit my parents, I stopped by the National Korean War Museum in Springfield, Illinois. The museum has excellent and moving displays honoring those who served in the Korean War. I highly recommend visiting it if you ever get the chance.

I look forward to reading your other blog posts.
All the best to you,
TamraTamra J. But between the subway tunnels of two cities is a 20-story rise over the Delaware River. It is still tidal there and I always look down to see if we have the mud flats of low tide or the lapping-at-shore-brush of high tide. It reminds me that underneath the brick and asphalt there's nature still coursing through.Martin Kelleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06999620933648327663noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4146739799811426023.post-59375484298039853902014-05-01T21:15:56.874-07:002014-05-01T21:15:56.874-07:00Well said, Gretchen. Comments like yours and others I’ve received have convinced me I’m not the only start-struck, sentimental NPR fan. In fact, I learned on the tour that NPR is the largest radio organization in the U.S. with 975 stations and 27 million listeners! That’s a lot of people who love storytelling; lots of “driveway moments,” too. Thanks for sharing your appreciation for NPR. NPR (or, as a colleague of mine, of a different political stripe, used to jokingly refer to it, National Pinko Radio) has been a formative piece of my adulthood. I started listening to it in college, falling in love with Bob Edwards' comforting, gravelly voice. (I later learned he was--is?--a heavy smoker, hence the gravel. Sigh.) Then I discovered A Prairie Home Companion. For three decades, NPR joined me on my morning and afternoon commutes, and helped me make dinner. I contribute regularly and gratefully. And--shameless bragging here--since Melissa Block was in my class in college, I feel even closer to ATC 'cause I know just what she looks like. :)

SO glad you got to take that tour, Iris, and thank you for taking us with you, just in case I never get back to DC.Gretchenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10561366091028513460noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4146739799811426023.post-25251422488564635932014-03-24T14:07:15.533-07:002014-03-24T14:07:15.533-07:00Thanks, Jeni.
